ON THE STREET

Six locals tell you where to go in Wisconsin’s capital.

Madison Mix

“Fresco (frescomadison.com), on top of the Overture Center. They have great drinks. You can sit outside and look at the scenery. It’s kind of a loungy atmosphere. On weeknights, it’s quieter, so you can enjoy a martini and good conversation.”

“Le Chardonnay (608-268-0372; le-chardonnay.com) is a restaurant that does French/Belgian-style cuisine very well. I especially like the all-you-can-eat mussels on Tuesday and Thursday nights.”

CHRIS FOX
YEARS IN MADISON: 19

“The Memorial Union Terrace (union.wisc.edu). From Tuesday to Saturday there are usually live bands there. It’s a nice open area to chill out, feel the breeze and unwind after a long day at work or whatever else you’re doing.”

ASHLEY GLASHEEN
YEARS IN MADISON: 5

“Paul’s Club (608-257-5250). I love the Bloody Marys. They get to know you really well. If you go to some of the other bars down the street—I won’t name any names—it’s all college kids, but there, it’s college kids, adults, a huge mix.”

PAM HOPKINS
YEARS IN MADISON: 42

“Olbrich Botanical Gardens (olbrich. org) on the east side of town. It started as a very small botanical garden that has grown over the years and now has this fabulous building that the country of Thailand donated. The Dalai Lama has been there.”

ELLIOT ENGEL
YEARS IN MADISON: 6

“Genna’s (gennaslounge.com). It’s my home away from home. They have great bartenders there, and a fantastic beer selection, with local beers on tap. For dinner, I suggest going to Muramoto (608-259-1040; muramoto.biz).”
