Spotlight: Marty Markowitz

King of the Hill

IN A TIME WHEN MANY residents are hard-pressed to name any of their community officials, most New Yorkers are familiar with Brooklyn borough president Marty Markowitz.

In many ways, Markowitz is Brooklyn’s biggest cheerleader, installing signs at entry points to the borough saying “How Sweet It Is!” and “Believe the Hype!”

Markowitz was elected borough president in 2001 after spending 23 years as a state senator from Brooklyn. His enthusiasm for the borough is evident as soon as he speaks, and that enthusiasm is wonderfully contagious.

He says with a laugh, “It is a fact that one in eight American families have Brooklyn roots, so we like to say that everyone is part of the Brooklyn family. We are home to everyone everywhere.”

What are some of your Brooklyn favorites?
“One of my favorite places in Brooklyn has to be Coney Island. The Cyclone coaster has been thrilling visitors since 1927. Plus, if you like to fish, we have deep-sea fishing boats that will take you out for an entire day. Then we have the promenade in Brooklyn Heights, which has spectacular views of Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty.”

Where do you like to go to listen to music?
“We have free concerts all spring and summer long. You can see music by the sea at Coney Island’s Seaside Park, and there are concerts all summer long in Prospect Park, along with movies and plays.”

It’s a known fact that you don’t like to leave the borough of Brooklyn, but where do you go when in Manhattan?
“I like the Upper West Side with Lincoln Center and the great restaurants. It’s a lot of fun for me when I go there, but my real love is the city of Brooklyn. Nothing beats it.”
